Yamaha introduces DTX firmware version 2.0 with new sounds and customisation options

Hand on a mixing desk

Yamaha introduces the new firmware version 2.0 for the DTX-PRO and DTX-PROX e-drum modules. The firmware update includes new high-quality kits and samples of Yamaha acoustic drums from the Recording Custom and PHX series. Version 2.0 also implements new sound and UI improvements, including natural kit resonance and adjustable pad dynamics. Through USB Trigger Link, a DTX900 or DTX700 module can be connected to a DTX-PRO or DTX-PROX module, making their exquisite sound library available to legacy kits.

DTX Firmware V2: new deluxe acoustic drum samples

Version 2.0 of the DTX Firmware comes with 30 new preset kits for the DTX-PRO and DTX-PROX modules. The new presets include all-new sample sets for Yamaha Recording Custom kits with their clear and cutting sound. The DTX-PROX additionally features PHX kits, adding their wide dynamic range and massive low midrange to the sound catalogue of the DTX-PROX. All kits have been meticulously sampled with minimal tuning or adjustments to preserve their natural character. Firmware version 2.0 also adds 30 new effect cymbal voices to the DTX-PROX library, including stacked cymbals.

Finetuning the DTXperience

The DTX firmware 2.0 also introduces a number of performance improvements. The Effect knob can now control the overall resonance of some of the new kits, adjusting the amount of resonance evoked in the rest of the kit when one part of it is struck. This lends an even more natural, acoustic feel to the playing experience. The new firmware also overhauls the dynamics to more accurately portray the player’s intention from delicate to powerful. New custom velocity curves can be used to tailor the dynamic response to personal preference for each pad individually. The natural variation for multiple strikes on a single pad has been improved, and a new option has been implemented to raise the pitch of some hi-hat models when the pedal is pressed hard. These improvements serve to get the DTX-PRO and DTX-PROX playing experience even closer to the performance of an acoustic drum kit.

Raise your kit to DTX-PROX level

The Yamaha DTX-PRO and DTX-PROX modules can now also act as expander modules via the USB Trigger Link function. A compatible DTX900 or DTX700 module can be connected to the DTX-PRO or DTX-PROX module, making the DTX-PRO and DTX-PROX sounds available without having to rely on a MIDI connection. This makes upgrading the sound of existing DTX700 and DTX900 modules easier than ever.

Yamaha DTX Touch App allows for in-depth editing of DTX kits via computers, tablets and smartphones

Man using App while mixing

Yamaha introduces the DTX Touch App for use with DTX6, DTX8 and DTX10 e-drum kits as well as DTX-PRO and DTX-PROX modules. The DTX Touch App makes all settings and parameters accessible from home computers, tablets or smartphones, allowing for very comfortable kit building and customisation. Every aspect of sound design, from basic kit selection to tuning to effects, and every setting for triggers or click can be edited from the device of choice. The DTX Touch App is available for Mac, iOS and Android devices.

Manage your kits: DTX Touch App

With the new Yamaha DTX Touch App, almost everything you can do in the DTX-PRO and DTX-PROX modules is accessible from the comfort of a computer, tablet, or smartphone. The only exception is uploading samples to the device, which requires a USB drive in the module – everything else can now be controlled with the devices of choice. Comfortable control with mouse and keyboard or touchscreens makes all edits easier and quicker, from small adjustments to entirely new setups. The option to search for specific types of drum kits (like “electronic” or “rock”, for example) further improves the data management with the DTX Touch App.

In-depth customisation

The Yamaha DTX-PRO and DTX-PROX modules allow for very deep customisation to achieve the perfect sound for every application and preference. With the DTX Touch App, these customisations can be dialled in more quickly and more precisely. From layering and levelling sounds to tuning or damping instruments to filtering and envelope design – DTX Touch App brings all the parameters to the users’ fingertips. The customisation also encompasses settings for the triggers or setting up the click. The Utility page allows for quick changes to many parameters on a single scrollable page. Creating unique sounds tailored to the specific requirements of every player becomes really easy with the DTX Touch App.

Intuitive control over every aspect

One big advantage of controlling all the parameters through the DTX Touch App is the visual orientation. Trigger curves, EQ settings and transient processing can be aided by the respective visual representation, as it helps make particularly abstract parameters more understandable. Plus, the DTX Touch App also includes the owner’s manuals, reference manuals and data lists for DTX-PRO and DTX-PROX in full, allowing performing artists to always have the manuals in their pockets in case they need to reference a certain aspect.

Yamaha updates MONTAGE M to OS 2.0 and the Expanded Softsynth Plugin ESP to v2.0

mixing desc

Yamaha updates the MONTAGE M synthesizers to OS version 2.0 and the accompanying Expanded Softsynth Plugin to v2.0. The new operating system includes new waveforms from the Yamaha flagship concert grand CFX and the classic electric piano CP80. It also introduces Smart Morph for the AN-X engine, a new creative Wave Folder distortion effect and Shimmer Reverb for huge, atmospheric sounds. The integration of MIDI 2.0 and a number of UI overhauls for improved workflow elevate the MONTAGE M synthesizers to the next level. The Expanded Softsynth Plugin v2.0 allows for deep editing and essentially multiplies the number of available MONTAGE M by an amount only limited by the DAW’s processing power.

Two big updates – one for the physical, one for the virtual

The Yamaha MONTAGE M series receives its first major update now to OS 2.0, adding new sounds and effects. With Smart Morph for the AN-X engine, the Wave Folder distortion and an all-new Shimmer Reverb, MONTAGE M 2.0 becomes an even more powerful sound design tool at no additional cost. Even better, Yamaha simultaneously releases version 2.0 of the Expanded Softsynth Plugin ESP, changing not only the amount of possibilities on the physical hardware instrument, but also the way it communicates with its virtual DAW counterpart. All the updated functionality of MONTAGE M OS 2.0 is also available in the plug-in, of course, further multiplying its potential impact on production and sound design.

New sounds: CFX grand piano and CP80 electric grand

The Yamaha MONTAGE M OS 2.0 update introduces two new waveforms to the instruments’ sound library. The new Yamaha CFX was introduced in 2022 and has been the flagship concert grand ever since, built for the world’s biggest stages. Its expressive sound has been captured for the MONTAGE M and adds another exciting colour to the synthesizers’ spectrum of piano sounds. The second new waveform is not quite as new: the CP80 presents the classic electric piano in pristine quality and rich detail with its very characteristic tone. The new waveforms give MONTAGE M users even more sonic substance to work with.

Sound design enhancements: AN-X Smart Morph and Wave Folder

Speaking of sonic substance, the Yamaha MONTAGE M OS update 2.0 also includes new sound design options. Firstly, Smart Morph comes to the AN-X engine. The creative technology that was already implemented for the FM-X engine in MONTAGE and MODX(+) instruments brings its versatile sound shaping possibilities to an entirely new universe of sounds in the MONTAGE M AN-X. Secondly, the new Wave Folder is an unusual tool that folds frequencies above a threshold back into the signal, affording effects from subtle colouration to drastic distortion. In combination with the Texture parameter, the Wave Folder offers a vast variety of minute sound variations – an effect made for tinkerers.

Shimmer Reverb for added shine

The OS 2.0 update for the Yamaha MONTAGE M also features a new reverb effect. First of all, Shimmer Reverb is a very high-quality reverb that adds depth and texture to sounds. Where Shimmer Reverb differs from other processors of this type is the inclusion of pitch-shifted feedback loops. A pitch-shifted version of the output signal is fed back into the input, creating a unique, larger-than-life sound. With high and low pass filters for the feedback signal, two pitch shifters spanning four octaves each, pan and balance for the shifted signals, modulation and colouration options, Shimmer Reverb becomes a powerful tool that can subtly enhance a sound – or completely shift it into another dimension.

MIDI 2.0 support and UI improvements

The update to OS 2.0 also integrates MIDI 2.0 into the Yamaha MONTAGE M. The high-resolution version of the data transmission protocol connects MONTAGE M with other MIDI 2.0-compatible devices. The MONTAGE M controllers for velocity, aftertouch, super knob, pitch bend, modulation wheel, quick edit/assignable knobs, sliders, foot controller and sustain support 10-bit data transmission. Rounding off the update to OS 2.0 is a number of UI improvements for quicker and more intuitive operation.

MONTAGE M in your DAW: ESP V2.0

One of the most valuable features of MONTAGE M is the availability of the Expanded Softsynth Plugin: a comprehensive virtual version of the synthesizer for use in DAW software. The ESP is not merely an editing aid – it is the actual sound engine with all its parameters in plug-in format. That means that every user can use as many MONTAGE M in their productions as their DAW can process. Every instance acts independently of the hardware synthesizer, but can communicate with it. This communication between the virtual and physical MONTAGE M versions has been largely expanded and improved with the new update to version 2.0.

More editing, more sound: the softsynth update

The new version 2.0 of the Yamaha Expanded Softsynth Plugin for MONTAGE M opens the plug-in’s editing capabilities, allowing for unlimited customization of parameters. While the previous version was limited in what parameters were accessible, this limitation is lifted in version 2.0. Data exchange between the software plug-in and the hardware has been overhauled, so complete sections like library or backup can be transferred between ESP and MONTAGE M directly. Sounds created with the ESP can be copied to the synthesizer, and vice versa. Furthermore, development of MONTAGE M and the ESP is now synchronized, making all subsequent updates appear in both the software and hardware version of the instrument. With this new version, the ESP makes MONTAGE M one of the most powerful production tools available.

Prices and availability

Both the update to version 2.0 of the Yamaha MONTAGE M OS and the ESP v2.0 are available immediately and free of charge for MONTAGE M owners. The MSRP (incl. 19% VAT) for the MONTAGE M synthesizers are

MONTAGE M6: 3,699.00 EUR
MONTAGE M7: 4,169.00 EUR
MONTAGE M8x: 4,649.00 EUR

The Expanded Softsynth Plugin is available only to owners of the MONTAGE M and is not sold separately.

PSI Audio and SRG-SSR create international reference for Dolby Atmos OB Vans

Swiss media company SRG-SSR has equipped three (the fourth one is coming) of its production OB Vans with state-of-the-art immersive audio monitoring systems from PSI Audio. With one of the OB Van for each of the SRG-SSR channels, RSI (Italian), RTS (French) and SRF (German), the company provides optimized quality for mobile productions like sports, entertainment or musical events. The vehicles, called PaaM-M, contain three PSI Audio A23-M for the front, two A14-M surrounds, four A14-M on the ceiling and a Sub A125-M for LFE, all immaculately integrated by Broadcast Solutions in an acoustics environment designed by Jochen Veith. The company’s engineers, who chose PSI Audio speakers in sophisticated blind tests, now claim they can sometimes achieve better results in the PaaM-M OB Van than in traditional studios. Since the PaaM-M OB Van were put into operation, RTS has equipped another OB van with a similar PSI Audio system, and more additions to the fleet are planned.

Full HD for Swiss media, SRG-SSR : high resolution for sound

The Swiss have a reputation of being very fond of quality items. Media broadcasters have a similar sort of reputation. So, everyone can imagine the kind of requirements a Swiss media company has towards its gear. When Swiss media company SRG-SSR, which envelops the TV, Radio and digital stations RSI (Italian), RTS (French) and SRF (German), recently equipped their latest OB Vans with new speakers for the immersive on-board monitoring setups, the engineers chose PSI Audio. Three A23-M make up the front of the listening system, complemented by two A14-M surrounds, four A14-M on the ceiling and a Sub A125-M for the LFE channel. The state-of-the-art audio monitoring system is now employed to perfectly capture and process sports events, entertainment and musicals, from major football events to cycling, tennis and beach volleyball to the “fête de la musique“ and shows like “52 minutes”. Best-quality programs produced with high-quality studio monitors from PSI Audio.

Big Rig: PaaM-M for RTS, SRF and RSI

SRG equipped three OB Vans with this system, all of the PaaM-M type, accommodating up to ten Full HD (and UHD ready) cameras. Regionals enterprise units; RSI, RTS and SRF create a national team to plan and build four PaaM-M (one each), ensuring comparable production environments for the three channels, especially when covering the same events. These trucks are a sight to behold: once they reach their working position, the side extends to create more space inside. At the heart of the system lies a Stagetec Avatus console with 36 faders, affording the engineers the flexibility required to cover the very different types of programmes produced with the PaaM-M trucks. All M- and L- sized OB Vans in the fleet are capable of mixing immersive audio, so the PaaM-M can now provide stereo, surround or Dolby Atmos – mixed with absolute precision thanks to the sophisticated PSI Audio speaker setup.

Outstanding performance required: the selection of PSI Audio

The decision for speakers in such a key position cannot be made lightly. Fabrice Mossuz, Audio Specialist at RTS, explains the selection process: “It was a total blind test with the speakers placed behind an acoustic curtain. About 40 sound engineers were given 40 minutes each to judge the speakers. They could use their own reference tracks, from classical music to TV shows, and would judge the speakers on several criteria.” These criteria included acoustic design, phase cohesion, spatial imaging, headroom, accuracy and ear fatigue. In the end, PSI Audio stood above the rest, and the decision was made to work with the Swiss manufacturer.

Complex integration: a Swiss-quality custom job

As one might imagine, the integration of speakers in a mobile studio creates challenges unlike those of normal studios – particularly in terms of size restrictions. Every detail of the building was meticulously planned, from the acoustics to the position of the side speakers. The A23-M were cut in the back with the amplifiers moved out of the speaker cabinets, so they could be soffit-mounted as per requirement. The speakers had to fit in the spaces left by the displays, and they had to be at very specific positions to avoid reflections. The acoustics, designed by German acoustician Jochen Veith, and the PSI Audio speakers now act together to deliver an outstandingly precise sound image for the engineers to work with.

Speakers to rely on

Mission accomplished; you could say: the speaker setup delivers the exact fidelity RTS was looking for. Fabrice Mossuz describes his experience: “They are very linear, non-tiring and precise. You can trust them.” With PSI Audio, the sound engineers from RTS, RSI and SRF know exactly what the viewers/listeners at home get. “When mixing in the truck, you can be sure to have a well-balanced production. Listening back to it on home environment will not surprise you.” Some sound engineers even claim they can sometimes get better results in the PaaM-M than they get in normal, stationary mixing studios.

The word spreads: more OB Vans to come

Integrator Broadcast Solutions and PSI Audio cooperated to conquer the enormously challenging requirements never before reached by an OB van. The result is an international reference, a fleet of trucks that sets the bar for all future endeavours in the field. Unsurprisingly then, RTS recently equipped another truck with the same system, replacing a renowned speaker manufacturer with the PSI Audio speakers. And the future seems bright for SRG-SSR engineers: in the coming years, they want to switch all their production vehicles with similar systems based on the PSI Audio A23-M. Now that is a testament of confidence in the Swiss-precision studio monitors from Yverdon.

Yamaha FGDP-50 and FGDP-30: finger drumming made easy for beginners, versatile for pros

Product image

Yamaha introduces the FGDP-50 and FGDP-30 finger drum pads. Ergonomically optimized to facilitate organic and vibrant finger drum performances, both models feature 18 pads, with the FGDP-50 coming with eight additional RGB-lighted pads. The layout is designed for finger drumming, pads and sound libraries are also tailored to that purpose. The FGDP models employ the DTX sound libraries and enhance them with newly created electronic sounds, giving the finger drum pads very versatile sound pools to work with. Both devices feature built-in speakers and rechargeable batteries, so they can easily be operated on their own without any peripherals. Connecting them to a computer or smart device is possible and enhances their scope even more, in particular when combined with the Yamaha Rec’n’Share app.

FGDP-50 and FGDP-30: finger drumming redesigned

The Yamaha FGDP-50 and FGDP-30 turn finger drumming into a more versatile and more easily accessible form of musical expression. Both feature 18 pads specifically designed to be played with fingers and are self-sufficient devices to keep it simple and allow creatives of all levels of experience to immediately start finding their rhythm. The FGDP-50 offers an additional eight RGB pads and a display as well as support for USB flash drives for importing sounds, playback and recording and additional features like Note Repeat that further bolster the creative capabilities of the finger drum pads.

Ergonomically optimized for perfect finger drumming

Yamaha optimized the FGDP pads to optimally support finger drumming. The layout is directed by the anatomy of the hand, so a typical three-finger performance is particularly easy to pull off: the thumb kicks the bass drum, the index finger hits the snare and the middle finger plays the hi-hat. This is merely a suggestion, of course – it is just as possible to use fingers of both hands or to come up with entirely different finger placements. The pads themselves are also designed with finger drumming in mind. They react more delicately than other drum pads to accommodate for the lesser energy usually exerted by fingers while also implementing appropriate dynamic control. For added expressive versatility, pushing down on the pads mutes the sound, recreating a cymbal choke effect. With this ergonomic setup, organic finger drum performance are a cinch with the FGDP-50 and FGDP-30.

Sounds from the big ones at your fingertips

Imagine having the sounds from the full-scale Yamaha e-drum kits quite literally at your fingertips – that is what FGDP-50 and FGDP-30 provide. The sounds from the DTX modules offer a variety of acoustic drum sounds to organically fit into any genre, plus newly created electronic sounds for an even wider creative range. The DTX kits have not simply been mapped onto the FGDP pads, either. Instead, they were optimized for the new instruments and adjusted for the playing with fingers instead of drum sticks, particularly in terms of velocity. The actual numbers underline the scope of the FGDP sound library: 1,500 voices and 48 preset kits for the FGDP-50 and 1,212 voices and 39 preset kits for the FGDP-30.

Self-sufficient finger drum modules: no environment required

One major issue Yamaha wanted to address with the FGDP-50 and FGDP-30 was the accessibility of finger drumming. Finger drumming performances required controllers and music production equipment as well as a high level of expertise to set up that gear. The FGDP range requires none of that, the models are self-sufficient in that they integrate everything creatives need. Both models include a built-in 2.5 W speaker and run on USB-rechargeable lithium-ion batteries. Pads and sound generator are also integrated into the device, so there is no need for any periphery to start a performance. Push the power switch and start playing – that’s how FGDP operates.

Convenient connectivity gets the most out of every performance

While there is no need to connect the Yamaha FGDP-50 and FGDP-30 to any other devices, there certainly is the possibility to do so. A USB connection to a computer allows for playing drum software or sample sounds from virtual instruments. The connection also enables recording audio or MIDI data to music production software, and playback from a smart device for practice and play-alongs. With the free Yamaha Rec’n’Share app (iOS or Android), users can easily grab and edit performances in video or audio form and upload them to social media.

Prices and availability

The Yamaha FGDP-50 and FGDP-30 finger drum pads are available immediately. The MSRP (including 19% VAT) is 356,00 EUR for the FGDP-50 and 214,00 EUR for the FGDP-30.

Yamaha CK88 and CK61 integrate CP and YC sounds with added versatility in highly portable instruments

Woman plays piano

All-rounders for stage, studio – and everywhere else

The new Yamaha CK88 and CK61 are made to be everything and everywhere: combining sound characteristics of the CP and YC instruments, the CK series specialises in making those sounds available wherever musicians need them. While traditional use on a stage or in a studio is certainly a possibility, CK88 and CK61 can operate beyond the usual confines of keyboards. The new models can be powered with batteries, allowing them to be taken outside, to the park, to a camping trip, to a bonfire – if a musician can go there, chances are they can play the CK series instruments there as well. With a line/microphone input and integrated loudspeakers, the CK models are even independent of external amps and speakers.

Three parts for versatile sound design

Complementing the popular CP and YC series instruments, the new Yamaha CK88 and CK61 utilize the wealth of high-quality sounds from the Yamaha Stage Keyboard ranges to make their diverse sound sets even more widely available. Pianos, electric pianos, strings, brass, organs and modern synths – the CK series has it all. What is more, CK88 and CK61 can layer and split these sounds in a variety of ways through its threefold architecture: three parts can load sounds independently of each other. Those parts can then be spread across the keyboard, split into up to three zones or layered with each other to generate vivid, organic and expressive sounds. Each part can individually be edited and processed with the integrated effects, and the mixed sound goes through an additional master effects section for the final touches. From resonant filters and envelopes to various drive and modulation effects to delay, reverb and a master equalizer, the CK series offers every option to finetune sounds.

Intuitive controls for riveting performances

One aspect that has been praised about all Yamaha stage keyboards is the intuitive controls. CK88 and CK61 continue this tradition, putting all important parameters at the players’ fingertips. The architecture of three parts makes it possible to easily and quickly switch between sounds and combine them during a performance, adding life to a show. Clever and customisable colour coding of the various switches keeps everything clear, signifying which parameter is active for which part. Dedicated drawbar controls allow for on-the-fly adjustments to the organ footage, granting more natural expression and a truly “organic” feel. The effect section enables quick setting of parameters, making the effects an integral part of the performative sound design.

Two sizes to fit individual needs

The Yamaha CK series comes in two different sizes. The CK88 features 88 GHS keys, accommodating more piano-oriented players when no grand piano is available. The CK61, on the other hand, employs lightweight FSB keys for keyboard players looking for a versatile wealth of sounds in a compact, mobile instrument. Both CK88 and CK61 are designed to be brought anywhere: the CK61 weighs in at 5.6 kg, the CK88 with its weighted GHS keys is just over 13 kg. For increased comfort when carrying the instruments around, soft cases are available for both models.

Prices and availability

The Yamaha CK88 and CK61 are available immediately. The MSRP (including 19% VAT) are:

CK88: 1,666.00 EUR
CK61: 1,071.00 EUR

Yamaha SEQTRAK combines drum machine, synthesizer, sampler and more in a compact mobile format

product image

Yamaha introduces the Music Production Studio SEQTRAK. The compact device is a standalone music production tool that comprises a step sequencer, drum machine, two AWM2 synthesizers, a reface DX style FM synthesizer, a sampler with recording functionality and an effects section as well as microphone, speaker and a rechargeable battery. An extensive (and growing) sound library and the clever, very intuitive workflow make SEQTRAK the ideal travel companion and an indispensable creative tool for studio, stage and road. The already comprehensive sound editing functionality is further enhanced by the free SEQTRAK app that allows in-detail adjustments of all parameters the device has to offer.

Standalone Music Production Studio: SEQTRAK

Yamaha SEQTRAK combines step sequencer, drum machine, synthesizer, sampler and mixing functionality in one compact, battery-powered device that also integrates microphone and speaker. This feature set makes it the perfect travel companion for musicians and producers who want to be able to capture ideas wherever they are. The foundation for music creation with SEQTRAK is the sequencer with its dynamic and intuitive controls. There are six pattern slots for every track that can be easily switched to introduce more variety. The sequencer and its divisions mark the grid on which the various sounds can be placed, and are the basis for recordings, live performances, and production on the go.

Beats in the pocket: the drum section

The first section of sounds on the Yamaha SEQTRAK is the drum section featuring seven tracks: kick, snare, clap, two hi-hats and two percussion sounds. Each of these tracks can be loaded with high-quality sounds from the extensive library. The sound library currently contains over 2,000 sounds across all SEQTRAK instrument categories and will be further expanded upon with additional sound packs. It is also possible to add other user’s samples via the SEQTRAK app. These sounds are then arranged on the step sequencer with its up to 128 steps, 16 of which are displayed through the step buttons on the face.

Harmonies and melodies: the synth and sampler section

The Yamaha SEQTRAK provides an impressive sounding synthesizer section. Three synthesizers and a sampler can be used simultaneously. The first two synths use the extremely versatile, 128-note polyphonous AWM2 engine by Yamaha. The third synthesizer is called DX and brings back the colorful sounds of this classic Yamaha synth with a four-operator FM engine. All synthesizers can be switched between mono, poly and chord modes to suit the specific requirements of the track. Seven keys are available to play melodies or chords, with selectable scale and key. In keyboard mode, the step sequencer keys turn into a chromatic keyboard. Even an arpeggiator is available. The sampler maps one sample sound to each of the keys, which again can be selected from the library. Alternatively, the SEQTRAK allows for recording and sampling individual sounds, either from an external source, via USB, re-sampling or with the built-in microphone. The amount of variety the SEQTRAK provides is remarkable, especially given its compact form factor.

Ear candy and polish: the sound design section

All the preset sounds in Yamaha SEQTRAK can be further edited in the sound design section on the right. Parameters like pitch, volume, pan, attack, decay or filter can be edited, depending on the selected sound. Further options come in the form of the effect section that allows for the addition of reverb, delay, modulation and more. Adding distortion to a kick or compressing the overall mix – it is all right here in the device. No additional periphery is required, the SEQTRAK can see a song from its original idea through to its final sound design.

Dive deeper: the SEQTRAK app

Yamaha invested a lot of thought into the design of the workflow of SEQTRAK, finding that delicate balance between intuition and depth. The SEQTRAK application grants even more extensive editing possibilities, giving access to all parameters of the effects, drums and synthesizers. The app even includes a visualizer that makes it easy to create interesting videos with animated objects reacting to the music.

Experience Yamaha SEQTRAK at NAMM 2024

Yamaha will be exhibiting the SEQTRAK – among a lot of other products – at the 2024 NAMM Show in Anaheim, California. Visitors can find Yamaha from 25th to 28th January at booth 300DE.

Price and availability

The Yamaha SEQTRAK will be available from January 2024. The MSRP is 474.81 EUR (including 19% VAT). The SEQTRAK app is available for free.

Yamaha MODX+: the synthesizer workhorse becomes even better

Man playing piano

MODX: compact high-end synthesizers

When they were introduced in 2018, the MODX synthesizers already brought a lot to the table. Inspired by the outstanding functionality and sound of the Yamaha MONTAGE synthesizers, MODX featured innovative controls including the multi-function Super Knob, four faders and a touch screen, while combining sample-based and FM-based sound creation just like the big sibling. The idea behind MODX was mainly centred around mobility, giving gigging musicians a chance to unleash the power of MONTAGE style synthesis and performance on stage without breaking their backs. Constantly updated with functionality improvements and new sounds, the MODX range has been on stages around the world, exciting musicians and listeners alike.

MODX+: more potential, more sound, more feeling

With the new Yamaha MODX+ models, the regular updates and expansions now transfer over to the hardware. The three new synthesizers feature 1.75 GB of internal flash memory, an upgrade of 75 percent compared to the original models, giving musicians more space for custom samples and synth sound libraries. The plus also stands for more polyphony, with 128-note stereo AWM2 and 128-note FM-X polyphony allowing for extended playability and more freedom in sound design. Even the haptics are further improved by rubber-coating both the modulation and pitch bend wheels for better grip and control in passionate performances – lending the MODX+ a proper MONTAGE feel.

The synthesizer powerhouse for the performing musician

All these improvements enhance the already brilliant experience of the original Yamaha MODX without compromising its strengths. MODX+ still features both sound engines: with AWM2 stereo samples for authentic and organic sounding natural instruments and FM-X frequency modulation synthesis for characteristic, flavourful synth sounds. It still allows for up to 13 simultaneous Dual Insert effects and three additional Master effects to shape the sound to perfection. Seamless Sound Switching prevents notes from cutting off when switching to a different performance. The extensive sound library covers original sounds as well as compatibility with MONTAGE, MOTIF XS/XF, MOXF and even DX and TX sounds (via the free FM converter on YamahaSynth.com). With Motion Control and a programmable matrix, all of these sounds can be dynamically performed, mixed and combined. The MODX+ is a real workhorse for musicians.

Top sound everywhere

Yamaha designed the MODX+ with the stages of the world in mind. MODX8+, MODX7+ and MODX6+ are meant to be on tour, to help musicians achieve their full potential in the heat of a live performance. Accordingly, all three models remain comparatively compact in size and lightweight. Optional cases and stands tailor-made for the MODX+ range ensure longevity and easy transport.

Three models cover all situations

Just like its predecessors, the Yamaha MODX+ series features three different models to address the specific needs and requirements of different types of musicians.

– MODX6+: features 61 semi-weighted keys for sound designers and producers wanting deep synthesis capabilities;
– MODX7+: features 76 semi-weighted keys for keyboardists needing a wide variety of sound, including all the layering and splitting they might need.
– MODX8+: features 88 graded hammer keys for the authentic acoustic piano touch discerning pianists require.
