IsoAcoustics Takes North American Distribution In-house

Photograph showing three people from the IsoAccoustics team (from left to right: Sean Morrison, Dave Morrison, Paul Morrison)

IsoAcoustics, a global leader in acoustic isolation solutions for the professional and consumer audio industry, is pleased to announce its strategic decision to move its North American distribution operations in-house, driven by the desire to take a more active role in its dealer relationships in the brand’s home territory. As the brand grows, this move will allow IsoAcoustics to support its North American dealers at the highest level and gain deeper insights into market needs for future product development.

Homegrown Acoustic Innovation That Spans the Globe

IsoAcoustics operates three core divisions: Home Audio, Pro Audio, and OEM. With many key functions — from product development and design to sales and marketing – already operating in-house, folding in distribution in North America will foster continued growth while preserving key values the company was built on. “Despite our global reach, IsoAcoustics remains a family run business, and we take pride in our desire and ability to have a direct role in all areas of our business,” said IsoAcoustics Founder and CEO Dave Morrison who runs the company alongside his sons, Sean and Paul.

Since its establishment in 2012, IsoAcoustics has been the go-to brand for isolation solutions that enhance the performance of speakers and audio equipment by reducing vibrations and improving sound clarity and openness.  Today, its products are distributed in over 70 countries and can be found everywhere from home listening rooms and living rooms to the most renowned recording studios across the world. In more recent years, IsoAcoustics has seen remarkable growth in its OEM division as over 50 of the world’s most distinguished audio manufacturers are working with IsoAcoustics to integrate its patented technology into their own products – Sonus faber, PSB Speakers, Marten, and Perlisten, to name a few.

“Our global business is poised for substantial growth over the next 5 years,” said Morrison. “Accordingly, it is important to us that we strengthen our foundation in North America so that we can best support our dealers here at home while setting the right standard for our global operations.”

North American Distribution Hubs and Timetable

IsoAcoustis has a longstanding Chicago area warehouse that has been used to service the United States since the early years of the business. It will once again act as a distribution hub and will be scaled up to service the demands from dealers across the USA. “The distribution infrastructure we built years ago is still in place, so our dealers, and subsequently our customers, will see no operational disruptions, and any pre-existing gaps in product availability will quickly be eliminated,” said Morrison. A Montreal area warehouse has been added to support Canadian operations. The transition to bringing distribution in-house was completed July 15th, 2024.

“We are fortunate to have this kind of dexterity and excited to reestablish a direct line between ourselves and the dealers we serve,” said Morrison. “It is the right time for us to take back control as we continue to grow IsoAcoustics here at home and abroad.”

PSI Audio AVAA C214 eliminates room modes with maximum efficiency

Photograph showing the active bass trap AVAA C214 in a studio environment

PSI Audio continues to turn heads with its AVAA technology. The new active bass trap AVAA C214 expands the AVAA family by a now digitally controlled variant of the original C20. The C214 is more compact and can be adjusted in its sensitivity through a remote app. It can be placed on the floor or mounted to walls or ceilings, depending on where it operates optimally. The innovative technology eliminates room modes, acting like a black hole that hoovers up resonant modal frequencies before they are bounced back. As it does not use anti-sound, the acoustic impression is changed for the better in the entire room, not just a small sweet spot.

C214 – new device, established efficiency

For PSI Audio, the AVAA C214 is an entirely new kind of product. For the first time in the company’s history, it features a DSP chip! The engineers at the company’s manufacture have found a way to realize the AVAA principle with a DSP, overcoming the challenge of reaching a latency below 0.2 milliseconds. The digital technology makes AVAA more flexible by virtue of its app that allows to adjust the device’s sensitivity, and can switch it on and off either individually or in groups. While mainly aimed at audiophiles and home users, this feature may come in handy in studios as well, if the engineers would like to tailor the room response to the sound being produced.

Room modes eliminated: AVAA

The basic principle of the PSI Audio AVAA C214 remains the same: it eliminates room modes caused by the rigid surfaces. These individual resonances of a room are one of the biggest challenges in acoustic design, and the AVAA makes it quite easy to tackle. While passive absorbers require a lot of material (we are talking metres thick!) or resonant absorbers need to be tuned to a specific frequency, the AVAA simply eliminates resonant frequencies between 15 and 160 Hz as effectively as a passive absorber 45 times its size. It does not affect the direct sound from the speakers, as room correction devices do, and it does not work with anti-sound, so the room modes are eliminated for the whole room, not just the sweet spot. The result is a clearer, more precise sound image – no one does precision quite like the Swiss.

The acoustic black hole – available in white

Essentially, the PSI Audio AVAA C214 imposes an acoustic impedance in front of the device – or, put simply, it acts like a hole in the wall. Instead of being bounced back, the respective sound waves disappear, they are sucked in by the C214. This acoustic black hole is now even more compact and easy to install, with wall brackets to place it wherever required in the room. Its maximum acoustic impact is complemented by its minimum visual impact, as it is available in black or white, allowing it to do its thing as covertly as possible.

IsoAcoustics presents live A/B test at HIGH END 2024

Promotional image for the presence of IsoAccoustics at the HIGH END 2024

IsoAcoustics invites visitors of HIGH END 2024 into room F210 in hall A4.2 (atrium, second floor). The manufacturer will provide conclusive A/B comparisons for everyone to evaluate. Marten Parker Trio Diamond will play music, one pair with IsoAcoustics, one pair with regular spikes, making the impact of IsoAcoustics acoustic isolation very obvious. IsoAcoustics will also display other collaborations with speaker manufacturers like Marten, Perlisten, PSB, Gershman and Sonus faber. HIGH END 2024 will take place from 9th to 12th May 2024 at the MOC in Munich, Germany.

Hear the difference: A/B demonstrations

At HIGH END, visitors will be able to appreciate the effectiveness of IsoAcoustics solutions by listening to A/B comparisons in the atrium room. The demonstrations will feature two sets of Marten Parker Trio Diamond speakers, one of which will be placed on normal spikes, while the other will be decoupled from the ground with IsoAcoustics technology. Marten and IsoAcoustics worked together to develop a solution tailor-made for the Marten speakers – and visitors get to hear why the renowned manufacturer chose IsoAcoustics to complement its speakers. The acoustic impact is immense and upgrades the listening experience considerably.

Full integration: cooperations with speaker brands

Apart from Marten, IsoAcoustics has worked with a number of prestigious brands, some of which will be displayed at the IsoAcoustics booth. Highlights include the Perlisten S7t limited-edition speakers, PSB Synchrony T800, Marten Mingus Septet and Gershman Acoustics Grand Avant Garde. Sonus faber has fully integrated the GAIA technology from IsoAcoustics in its Suprema high-end speaker, isolating the speaker cabinet from the base plate in both the main tower and the subwoofer. The base plate of the Suprema will be on display to showcase the integration. These collaborations indicate how speaker manufacturers value the increase in audio quality achieved through IsoAcoustics technology.

The magic of science: IsoAcoustics technology

The difference between speakers with or without IsoAcoustics decoupling is astonishing – so much so that some people assume magic at its source. It is all solid, innovative engineering, though: the isolators mitigate vibrations transferred from the speaker to its supporting surface, thus reducing resonances in the room and clearing up the sound image. They also avoid resonances reflecting back into the cabinet, so they cannot interfere with the speakers themselves. The effect is a notably more transparent, clean sound with more defined stereo imaging and depth – a total upgrade for the speaker system.

Experience IsoAcoustics at HIGH END 2024

Visitors of HIGH END 2024 from 9th to 12th May 2024 at the MOC in Munich, Germany, can find IsoAcoustics on the second floor of the atrium in hall 4 (A4.2) in room F210 to experience the effect of IsoAcoustics technology first hand.

PSI Audio showcases white AVAA C214 active bass trap and Héritage3 stereo speaker system at HIGH END 2024

From 9th to 12th May, PSI Audio will exhibit at HIGH END 2024 in Munich. The main focus will be on the innovative AVAA C214 active bass trap, which will be presented in a dedicated listening room as well as in the form of a demo box at booth R09 in hall 3.

Swiss precision audio in Munich

The HIGH END show in Munich has long been established as one of the most important shows for audiophile technology in the world. PSI Audio will be at the 2024 show, mainly to present the recently released AVAA C214 active bass trap. This modified version of the renowned AVAA C20, which has revolutionized room acoustics for years, is specifically tailored to the requirements of home audio enthusiasts. Making its debut at the show is the new white finish for the AVAA C214, allowing it to seamlessly fit into even more environments. In addition to the AVAA, PSI Audio also showcases the high-end speakers Héritage3 at HIGH END 2024.

Cleaning up the acoustics with AVAA C214

With the AVAA system, PSI Audio has tackled the most challenging part of acoustics: room modes. The Active Velocity Acoustic Absorber imposes a very low acoustic impedance, practically acting like a hole in the wall, equivalent to 45 times the size of the device. Resonant frequencies are not reflected back into the room, but instead are eliminated, creating a clearer, more precise sonic image not just at the listening position, but in the entire room, with tighter bass and a perfect sound stage. The AVAA C214 features a DSP chip that allows adjustments via smartphone app and future updates for maximum convenience at home. Working at a much higher efficiency compared to traditional porous absorbers, the PSI Audio AVAA C214 requires much less volume for a similar effect. For example, even a perfect porous absorber would need to be 2 metres thick to be effective at 40 Hz, and twice that for 20 Hz, while the AVAA goes down to 15 Hz at only 25 cm diameter. Add to that the fact that the AVAA C214 can easily be moved to a different room, or a different house altogether, and requires no tuning or calibration, and it becomes clear what a powerful, yet compact solution it is.

Exquisite listening pleasure with Héritage3

At HIGH END 2024, PSI Audio also features its first floor-standing speakers specifically designed for home audio users: Héritage3. The three-way system is based on the studio speakers that are popular around the world for their untouchable accuracy, reproducing sound just as it was committed to the recording. Professionals appreciate the pure honesty of the all-analogue PSI Audio speakers, as do audiophiles who want to hear only what the artists intended – the real thing. The Héritage3 delivers this hallmark Swiss precision sound and dresses it in a unique and classy ported enclosure.

Experience PSI Audio at HIGH END 2024

HIGH END 2024 takes place from 9th to 12th May 2024 at the MOC in Munich, Germany. PSI Audio, the AVAA C214 and the Héritage3 can be found in hall 3 at booth R09. The open booth will feature the AVAA in a cleverly designed demo box to showcase its potential, while the listening room right behind it will present the Héritage3 playing to a room optimized with five AVAA C214. Ed Thorne trusts in PSI Audio A23-M and commends their “most neutral, transparent sound”

Ed Thorne is serious about sound, which his subscribers on YouTube appreciate. Not willing to compromise on his monitoring system, the London-based music producer tested a number of popular studio speakers and eventually picked his favourites: PSI Audio A23-M.

Ed Thorne: drummer, producer, YouTuber

For Ed Thorne, music really was his first love – more specifically, the drums. Starting to play at 11 years old, he broke into the professional music scene in London in his early twenties, regularly playing five gigs per week. He soon found himself taking care of the tech the bands needed, and consequently started his own full-time sound company. Over time, he gravitated more towards studio work, and eventually focussed on recording and mixing music. “And that is where YouTube came in,” Ed Thorne explains. “I wanted to document the process of writing, recording and producing an album, just to give people an idea of exactly what is involved in production.” Success was not immediate, as Thorne remembers: “I did a couple of videos documenting the first song that I fully recorded, engineered and mixed myself. No one cared. So I pivoted and did some educational content, like how EQs worked. Things I knew from my live days. Again, no one cared.” Then came the pandemic, and things changed. “I made a video comparing audio interfaces, and just so happened to release them in April 2020 when everyone was looking for content like that. The video took off and somewhat defined the YouTube channel.”

Extensive shoot-outs to find the perfect speakers

Like with his content, Ed Thorne also tried different monitoring systems. “It was an interesting journey because I really had to figure out what was going to work for me,” he says. His studio room in Western London is quite small, which always poses a challenge in terms of acoustics. So he tried very different speakers: the popular ones, the obvious ones, some more exotic ones. After time-consuming and elaborate listening tests, Ed Thorne had collected a lot more experience with speakers. And he had formed an opinion that governed his choice – the Swiss-precision three-way speakers A23-M by PSI Audio.

Analogue precision and natural depth

One major reason for Ed Thorne to pick PSI Audio over all other brands is the all-analogue approach. “I tried a lot of speakers,” he explains, “and some were really good, but they used DSPs and I felt like I could hear when the DSP was interfering and correcting. Almost as if they were trying to trick my ears. With PSI Audio, I immediately recognized that they are 100 percent analogue. They sound so natural. They’re the most neutral, transparent speakers I could find.” When asked to elaborate on the analogue sound, Thorne replies: “The most spacious top and the deepest depth. It’s like with preamps. Preamp modelling can sound quite good, but it is relatively flat, it lacks depth and richness. There is a three-dimensionality with analogue gear. That was something I heard with the PSI Audio speakers – others could come close, but something just doesn’t feel right with them. It does with PSI Audio.”

PSI Audio takes the guesswork out of mixing

Professionals need to be able to rely on the sound image they are presented by their speaker systems, and Ed Thorne stresses this fact with an anecdote. “I like running my guitars through a Wes Audio Rhea for its THD circuit. It creates some tube harmonics and saturation with the THD on medium at one percent and on high at 2.5 percent. On my previous speakers, I would notice the 2.5 percent when I would switch it on and off. On the PSI Audio speakers, even at only one percent, I was like: Oh! We will have to be careful with that!” Before, Thorne needed to double-check his mixes on different systems, even on his phone. With his PSI Audio A23-M, he always gets an accurate representation of the audio he is working on. “Things like overcompression are glaringly obvious,” he says. “The PSI Audio speakers are a joy to work on.”

Velodyne Acoustics MiniVee X: Compact Bass Multi-Talent Soon Available

The MiniVee X subwoofer from Velodyne Acoustics will be available in larger quantities at specialist retailers from the second quarter of 2024. The manufacturer’s latest development was first introduced at this year’s ISE in Barcelona, can be conveniently controlled via app, and offers reliable DSP room adaptation. Furthermore, the model features a wide range of connections with one passive and one active driver in a force-cancelling design: XLR, RCA, and speaker terminals are on board. As usual, Velodyne Acoustics has gone to great lengths to achieve maximum bass with minimal resonance reproduction, using cabinet bracing, a double-vented voice coil, and generously dimensioned components.

MiniVee X: a Multi-Talent for Precise Bass

The MiniVee X subwoofer has a sealed MDF cabinet and is finished with high-gloss lacquer. Despite its compact dimensions, the manufacturer has deliberately chosen to add additional bracing inside to make the construction even more torsionally rigid. This allows the subwoofer to achieve the best possible bass performance with superior precision. The two completely newly designed 8-inch drivers also contribute significantly to the extraordinarily low-resonance reproduction. One passive and one active driver are arranged opposite each other in a force-cancelling design, and a 2-inch voice coil with four-layer winding enables powerful and extremely precise membrane excursion. To ensure optimal heat dissipation despite the impressive power of 350 watts RMS, the drive is double-vented.

Wide Range of Connections

Thanks to excellent connectivity, the new subwoofer’s application possibilities are nearly unlimited: The RCA connections for the left and right channels and the LFE input allow for easy installation in HiFi and home theater systems. Additionally, speaker terminals are available to connect amplifier electronics without suitable RCA outputs. Many high-end enthusiasts prefer the parallel wiring of subwoofer and main speakers using the high-level input. Moreover, Velodyne Acoustics has also installed XLR connections to enable truly the full range of wiring options.

Convenient Control and Automatic Room Correction

For Velodyne Acoustics, automatic room correction has long been an important feature of their subwoofers. With the new Velodyne Acoustics Auto EQ App, users can optimally harmonize the MiniVee X with the room and their listening preferences. Numerous DSP functions can be controlled intuitively via the software for Android or iOS smartphones. Settings such as volume, crossover frequency, and phase, as well as the Auto-EQ function, can be quickly and easily adjusted with the app. Another highlight is included in the delivery: The MiniVee X comes with a specially tuned measurement microphone.

Prices and Availability

The MiniVee X subwoofer is expected to be available from authorized dealers from Q2 2024. The recommended retail price including VAT is 999.00 euros.

IsoAcoustics and Sonus faber cooperate on the new high-end Suprema sound system

Sonus faber and IsoAcoustics have worked together to optimize the decoupling of the new Sonus faber Suprema flagship speaker system retailing for US$750,000. This 2.2 system consists of two main speaker columns, two subwoofers, an active crossover and employs IsoAcoustics GAIA-Capsule isolators in its base to mitigate vibrations. The patented IsoAcoustics technology helps the exquisite components of Suprema to develop their full potential without interference from vibrations in the room or reflections back into the cabinet.

Absolute sonic excellence: Sonus faber Suprema

Sonus faber is a name synonymous with immaculate sound. The Italian manufacturer does not compromise when developing its sophisticated systems, and the new Suprema is a testament to that philosophy. Priced at US$750,000, the Suprema system includes two main columns, and two subwoofers, along with an electronic crossover, all delicately crafted from exquisite materials. Ten drivers per main column, two of which are mounted in the back, are complemented by two powerful low-frequency drivers per subwoofer to generate the natural, immensely detailed sound Sonus faber is famous for.

Get the sound off the ground: IsoAcoustics isolators in Suprema

The Sonus faber Suprema is a real full-range system, reaching from 16 Hz all the way up to 40 kHz. The engineers at Sonus faber would not let such a wide-ranging and finely tuned system simply connect to the floor and create resonances to interfere with the purity of its sound – so they got IsoAcoustics on board. A multi-level suspension system between the cabinet and the baseplate in both the tower speakers and the subwoofers ensures the Suprema can exploit its full potential. The tuned set of IsoAcoustics GAIA-Capsule isolators keep vibrations from reaching the supporting surface and mitigate their reflection back into the cabinet, allowing Suprema to shine in all its brilliance and glorious depth. “We used to have a decoupling system outside of the main body, but that solution with exposed springs or elastomers was always a compromise for us,” says Chief Design Officer Livio Cucuzza. “With Suprema we wanted to keep the design cleaner and more integrated. We had the opportunity to develop a system with IsoAcoustics that is part of the main structure.”

Instant upgrade for every speaker: IsoAcoustics technology

The patented IsoAcoustics technology is designed to decouple devices such as speakers, turntables and other audio equipment from their respective supporting structures. This acoustic isolation results in two major effects: firstly, vibrations are not transferred to the supporting structure, and hence do not resonate in the room. The sound in the room is clearer and is not disturbed by interference. Secondly, vibrations are also not conducted back into the speaker cabinet, where they could smear the sound image and impede everything from the frequency response to transients, and ultimately blurring the sound. Using IsoAcoustics isolators improves speaker performance, resulting in a more transparent and detailed sound. So much so, that even a high-end system like the Sonus faber Suprema benefits from this integration.

Sonus faber and IsoAcoustics – acoustic delight

While the IsoAcoustics effect can help any speaker sound its best, Sonus faber has gone to the next level by integrating the new GAIA-Capsule version of the renowned IsoAcoustics isolators into the Suprema system. By considering the speaker within its environmental context, Sonus faber enhances the auditory experience, taking it to a superior level with this innovative integration. “IsoAcoustics achieve this great performance in the mid-high frequencies where everything becomes clearer without losing dynamics on bass,” Livio explains. “IsoAcoustics is more precise, more refined, and everything in the soundstage is more clearly localized. We are really happy with the results.” Sonus faber and IsoAcoustics – a cooperation for absolute sonic perfection.
